Chapter 15

In the morning I broach the subject of needing a key to the apartment for myself. I’m hardly held captive here, free to come and go as I please, but usually one of the doormen has to let me back in when I return. Charlie admits that I have a point and that night when he comes home, he hands me a small box. I shouldn’t be surprised when I see a key sitting inside, but I still am.

“What will I give you for our first Christmas now?” he moans, feigning dismay.

“You’re sure you’re okay with this? Giving me a key? You don’t feel like we’re moving too fast?” I ask, holding it in my hand. The key is on a bicycle keychain. For a moment, I can’t decide if it’s too much dark humor, but then I smile. It's just the right amount.

“Do you feel like we’re moving too fast?” He ducks to look me in the eye, his fingers grazing my chin, lifting my head to look at him.

My lips twist into a scowl. “Answering a question with a question is so annoying,” I retort, stalling. “I’m okay with it, but I’m not the one whose friends and family are worried about me being manipulated by some gold digger.”

Charlie takes my hands, with the keyring wrapped around a finger, and plops next to me on the couch. There is no hesitation to what he has to say. “Fuck them.”

I laugh.

“No, seriously, fuck them. I think we can both agree that you hardly sought me out. You didn’t dive in front of my car knowing I was in it, planning to get my money. I think we can also agree that this has been something more for a while, even before the trip. I know I was afraid to say anything to you.” He pauses.

“We both spent so much time worrying that the other might feel they were being taken advantage of, that we never said what we meant or what we wanted to say. At least, I did for those first few months. So I’m going to say it.” He pauses again and looks meaningfully into my eyes. “Move in. Keep your apartment if you want, so you know you have somewhere to fall back to, but I told you before and I’ll tell you again: I’m all in.”

I kiss him, squeezing the key between our hands, the ridges imprinting on my skin. A brief thought dances through my head: maybe it's finally time to visit my old apartment, now that I’m in a different headspace.
